The jar and the shelf

The kitchen shelf grows calm around a jar of flowers: the kettle, the notebook, the posy, and the morning’s two quiet minutes.

Compose the shelf deliberately

Clear the shelf of everything that merely landed there, and return three things: the kettle, the notebook, and the jar. The arrangement is a small piece of landscape architecture, built at elbow height.

Light matters more than symmetry; the jar goes where the morning reaches it. Flowers on the working shelf are seen forty times a day, flowers on the sill twice.

Let the shelf set the morning

The two-minute ritual writes itself: water the jar while the kettle heats, one line in the notebook while the tea steeps. A short yoga stretch completes the set, facing the shelf’s light.

This is the journal’s whole argument in one shelf: a few chosen objects, a repeated minute, and the calm that grows in the repetition’s shade.
