Flowers for a friend

Flowers given are relaxation shared: a posy carried, a jar already conditioned, and the visit that goes with both.

Carry it conditioned

Cut and condition the posy the evening before, wrap it in damp kitchen paper and a bag for the walk, and carry it stems-down. Arriving with flowers that will actually last is the difference between the gesture and the gift.

Bring the jar too, when the friendship allows it: the gift that needs no vase hunting is the gift that gets displayed.

Stay for the arranging

Arrange the jar together at the friend’s sink, which is the whole visit’s quiet centre. The hands busy, the talk easy, the flowers holding the middle: the journal’s kitchen ritual, exported.

Note what they kept and how long it held, next time you speak. The flower almanac, it turns out, runs on friendship as much as on water, which is the last finding in this issue and the pleasantest.
